If you have been following the blog posts from the beginning then you now have an understanding of where chiropractic has come from, how chiropractic affects our health, and where chiropractic can take your health in the future-or, at least, it has peeked your curiosity.
Hopefully the information will challenge some of your belief systems. You see, belief systems are what drive our behavior and create the environment that surrounds us. But where do these belief systems come from? It is often said that they are a product of our mothers, fathers, preachers and teachers, though today the influence of peer pressure and advertising have certainly played a large role.
When I ask people what they consider the definition of health to be the common reply is being happy, relaxed and moving well. Essentially having good physical and mental wellbeing. What gives us this healthy standing? Again, the common response is eat right move right and think right. Yet the first sign of symptom and people turn to the medical doctor for some sort of outside treatment, drugs or surgery. An outside-in strategy.
When we try and change health in the face of adversity (symptom) we try to adjust our diet, start an exercise program and or promise to be happier-all behavior modification.
The problem lies in the fact that our belief systems haven’t changed and ultimately we give up after failing to see consistent, long term change.
We have been introduced to the medical model through our mothers, fathers, preachers and teachers and peers and advertising which essentially says that health comes from the outside, bad genes, bad germs and bad luck, and any intervention has to come from the outside, drugs or surgery and this developed the belief system that we have no choice or the “Have To” belief system.
